I wasn't planning on buying another Audio Technica table. They didn't have anything other than the ATLP120 in the direct drive flavour that interested me. Even their 60th anniversary model was belt driven.
Then I learned about the AT-LP8X. I loved the simplistic look of this turntable, additionally the fact that it is direct drive and semi automatic just sung to me. I wasn't planning to upgrade any time soon but the DD and Semi Auto features convinced me otherwise.
When I received the LP8X I immediately swapped the stock AT-VM95E for the VM540ML which I already owned.
After spending a few weeks with this unit I am very pleased with what AT did with this turn table.
The tone arm lift mechanism is great and very quick, it took me a few days to unlearn the habit of immediately getting up after a record stopped playing and lifting the tone arm up manually.
Now I can walk away from my music knowing that the turn table will automatically lift the needle and stop the record spinning at the end. I no longer have to worry about unnecessary wear of the stylus.
The lift mechanism works extremely well, unlike other tables at this price point.
Unlike the LP120 there is also ample clearance under the unit, I can place it on top of my receiver knowing that the heat is able to escape.
Awesome quality product very accurate direct drive, and even better service from Unity Audio.
It is a solid proper turntable with a heavy plinth and platter, and quality arm with VTA. I enjoy it being semi-automatic, very unusual in this category of turntable, as well being less expensive than the competition - i.e. Music Hall Stealth and Thorens DD tables.
This turntable is fantastic. It’s very solid, sounds wonderful, and has automatic stop/ needle lift at the end of a record, which strangely has become hard to find. Who doesn’t want that?? You want to jump up and run over to the record player when you have company over?? Unity was great to deal with. Good communication and shipped when promised.
